Mechanical Engineer

Position/Program Description: The engineer will support the Metrology Division providing measurement traceability to US legal standards defined, maintained, and disseminated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in support of the Navy’s entire calibration program. Support the metrology division to maintain and disseminate the most accurate units of measurement in the Navy METCAL program; and develop and maintain precision measurement systems of the required accuracy to effectively provide measurement traceability to national measurement standards maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Measurement Institute (NMI) or intrinsic standards for all of the Navy’s calibration facilities throughout the world.

Skills Required:

· The Engineer advises on, administers, or performs professional, scientific, or technical work concerned with engineering or architectural projects, facilities, structures, systems, processes, equipment, devices, material, or methods. Applies knowledge of the science or art, or both, by which materials, natural resources, and powers are made useful.

· Performs engineering work that is associated with specific tasks which may be a significant part of a major project. Assignments may also be a part of a major program having few, if any, new requirements calling for advanced engineering concepts. Work as a member of an engineering team responsible for developing a project using information available in guides, catalogs, or technical information where others have developed the concepts, theories, and methodology. Some adaptation is required to ensure the project meets engineering specifications.

· The Engineer may or may not have good working knowledge of metrology engineering concepts and how to get things done. The supervisor is usually available to answer questions; however, the employee is expected to search out and recommend solutions to unusual problems. Work is normally accepted as accurate and, unless the employee questions results, will be accepted by the supervisor or project manager.

· The five primary products to be delivered by the engineer are: Calibration Measurement Requirements Analysis Reviews, Calibration Requirements Analysis, Measurement Uncertainty Analysis, Instrument Calibration Procedure, Metrology Engineering Investigations.

Education: Position requires a BS or BA degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related scientific discipline.

Experience: At least three (3) years of recent and relevant experience in a position related to the labor category “Description” is required. Demonstrated knowledge in area of engineering expertise is required.
